Subject: NOBEL PEACE PRIZE AWARD
09/10/2009
Dear President Barack Obama,
We the undersigned, who are among the participants of the 10th Bioregional Congress of North America, gathered at The Farm Community in Summertown, Tennessee, make the following evident:
On October 9th, 2009 we were pleasantly surprised to hear that you have been awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. In September 2008, we were equally surprised with the news that you were nominated as US presidential candidate for the Democratic Party.
Your election as the 44th President of the US was unprecedented in history, especially for those of us who have participated in so many different social movements and who in some way or another have made our voices heard, worked and struggled for many decades aiming towards having that one person who would represent our values, not only within the US political context but those that embrace the wellbeing of the whole Planet.
We are inspired by the news of your award for it encourages people in every continent. It renews our hopes and strengthens our shared understanding regarding the historical possibilities of establishing the basis for a new global vision based on liberty, social justice, sustainability, respect for ethnic, cultural, religious, ideological and gender diversity as well as equality, human cooperation and the care of Mother Earth.
Such acknowledgement of your efforts is also a recognition to those of us who are activists for change, building the foundations for a bioregional planetary Culture of Peace and for this we can congratulate each other as we congratulate you, for we consider your achievement a true victory for us all.
And this is why we publicly manifest our support and consensus with the endorsement of the International Committee of Norway who awarded you The Nobel Peace Prize. An award given to you not only as a human being with a vision but to you, President Barack Obama, the community and political organizer who, from a high position, can contribute to a radical change in this World.
This extraordinary field of leverage requires that words, promises and actions be congruent to the world climate of distension and optimism in order to promote the continuity of peace negotiations and disarmament programs in process.
Just as we offer you our consent and support with each initiative that contributes to a tangible improvement in relations amongst nations, cultures and with nature, we will also be ever aware and vehemently oppose any decision that does not build peace, insure a right relationship with the Earth. We do not support actions that promote polarization, conflict and the furtherance of armed strategies, be it at a national or international scale.
We applaud your positioning on the US-Iran relationship, your speech for the Muslim Country leaders and your proposal for the banning of military bases in Europe, in order to soften the US relations with Russia. We also applaud your offering mediation between the Palestinian people and Israel.
We petition from you, as the carrier of the Peace Banner of this planet, that you maintain your commitment to the dismantlement of the military base in Guantanamo, Cuba and you put a final end to the economic blockade that this country has suffered for more than five decades.
We also petition you, as President of the United States and Nobel Peace Prize winner, a clear and immediate positioning against the coup d’etat in Honduras, a removal of existing US military bases in South America and an end to construction of new ones, as well as a quick withdrawal of the armed forces in Iraq, Afghanistan and Pakistan.
Worldwide, people are asking you to take a vital leadership position at the COP-2009 (World Conference for Climate Change) in Copenhagen by adopting those measures that positively affect climate change and promote ecological security.
Your new position as leader and ombudsman for World Peace is a well deserved recognition of your work, as well as a new responsibility that you are now assuming for all of humanity, who in the great majority will be with you, at your side, with every step and action that contributes to the construction of a better and safer world for all, but who will be equally vigilant that such actions are coherent with the precepts that we have inherited from all great pacifists, social, spiritual and environmental leaders who have preceded us.
Sincerely,
Text drafted by
